Postoperative Lasik Surgery Results

Understanding what Lasik surgery actually does can help you recover better. It's important to understand that your eye has a cool ultraviolet laser cut a flop, remove damaged tissue, and then reshape the cornea. Postoperative care is important, as with any surgical procedure knowing what to expect can only help you heal quicker and faster.

You need to completely heal the corneal flap, and although many find successful healing procedure much quicker, it can take up to two years. Most postoperatively patients will find that they're completely healed within six months and having most vision problems completely unnoticeable. Others may take longer to heal, but the healing process is not uncomfortable and is hardly noticeable to the patient

Your recovery time will be closely followed by your doctor and may include up to five postoperative visits. The first is usually done within 24 hours of your laser surgery and the continual monitoring by your doctor is vital to complete healing process.

You'll probably be recommended to use eye drops to help alleviate discomfort and initiate the healing of your eyes. Although not painful, some discomfort is normal including watery eyes and running nose, sensitivity to bright light, redness and minor inflammation of the eye, dry scratchy eyes, slightly blurred vision and the continual use of eye drops. Most of these symptoms will disappear within six months or faster, and as there is no pain involved, discomfort is actually minor.

Before taking any medication for discomfort, you'll need to check with your doctor as many over-the-counter medicines contain aspirin, Tylenol or Advil ingredients. You may also be recommended to rest as much as possible and make sure your eyes are protected from bright sunlight. You'll also want to be careful of any water that comes in contact with your eyes, just as any other open wound, contamination is an issue.

Complications of laser eye surgeries are minimal, but according to your particular vision problems complications can rise. Astigmatism can increase complications, and you want to discuss with your doctor the success of laser surgery if you have astigmatism. You'll also want to discuss thoroughly with your doctor if you are between the ages of 19 and 24, age does affect the success. Any time you have had a new prescription for your vision prescribed or any type of refractive instability. You'll want to alert your laser eye surgeon. The eye and growth must be stable in order to have success with laser eye surgery.

It's important to be thoroughly honest with your laser eye surgeon as well as being thoroughly informed about the procedure, post-op procedure and costs. The best success is developed by those who are informed surgery patients, Lasik eye surgery is a great way to improve your vision, but although not often, there are times when complications can result, your vision becomes worse, or it may not help at all.
